University of Cape Town

Study Abroad Programmes for International Students' Groups in association with African Angel Tours and the University of Cape Town.

The Centre for Open Learning, at the University of Cape Town (UCT), offers customised short courses to universities wishing to bring small groups of students to South Africa during the end of year and mid year vacations.

These courses are distinguished in significant ways from the University of Cape Town's normal engagement with international students through its International and Academic Programmes Office (IAPO).

  • Courses are run outside the normal teaching semester, running from two to six weeks, and between mid June to mid July, or between mid December and late January.
  • The University of Cape Town contracts directly with a visiting university, and not with the individual students.
  • Courses are customised to suit the specific needs of the visiting university.
  • The University of Cape Town does not provide accreditation for these courses, as they generally form part of a broader course accredited by the visiting university.

The University of Cape Town has developed an effective working relationship with AfricanAngelTours, a well established professional operator in this field. Between us we are able to offer a range of services.

  • Academic curriculum development, including assistance with designing a course appropriate to the learning outcomes desired by the visiting university.
  • Academic teaching inputs, from both University of Cape Town lecturing staff and guest lecturers.
  • Field visits appropriate to the course, enabling visiting students to integrate their own site-specific experiences with lectures and other academic inputs.
  • Access to University of Cape Town facilities, including the campus shuttle service, library facilities, computer facilities and sports facilities.
  • Provision of academic teaching venues.
  • A full range of accommodation options, from student residences to hotels.
  • A full range of meal options.
  • A full range of transportation services.
  • Orientation to Cape Town and the university, including safety and security briefings;
  • Special events and social evenings.

University of Cape Town

Most academic visitors, though needing to be focused primarily on their course work, will also want to experience more of what Cape Town and South Africa have to offer, both as engaged students wanting to understand more of the local context, and as tourists in a foreign country. A full range of local tours is offered, including Cape Point, Robben Island, Cape Town's museums and galleries, Cape Town's winelands, Cape Point and the Table Mountain National Park. As most groups fly in and out of the country through Johannesburg, many individuals also want to spend three or four days in that region, after their course is over, and before finally leaving for home. Most popular here is a trip to the Kruger National Park. The University of Cape Town works closely with African Angel Tours to offer these additional services.
To give some sense of the range of services available, two recent examples of visiting groups are used.

  • The first group made all their own arrangements for flights and accommodation, and brought all their own lecturers and course materials. All that the University of Cape Town was asked to provide was access to teaching venues, a short orientation to the campus, and access to library and computer facilities.
  • The second group required that the University of Cape Town design and deliver its entire academic programme; provide all accommodation, catering, transport and other logisitical arrangements, provide access to all campus facilities, and provide a programme of cultural and other visits in the area.

The University of Cape Town is pleased to be able to customise the service it offers specifically to the needs of the visiting university, and prices are set accordingly.
